In 2018, one amusement will be played in Melbourne, trailed by recreations in Sydney and Brisbane. New South Wales will head into the arrangement with another mentor as Brad Fittler takes the rules from Laurie Daley. Kevin Walters will again mentor the Maroons after a prolific 2017 method.

The Maroons have won the game 11 of the last 12 arrangement, however, will head into 2018 without stalwarts of that achievement Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk. Rugby group coordinates between New South Wales and Queensland have been played for as far back as a century, yet it took until 1980 for the State of Origin to go from idea to reality. Preceding that, players spoke to the state where they played, as opposed to where they initially came from. Queenslanders were edgy to talk to their home state thus the State of Origin was conceived, with Arthur Beetson chief training the Maroons to a 20-10 triumph at Lang Park on July 8, 1980.

It took an additional five years for the Blues to record an arrangement triumph under the new Origin determination criteria, with Steve Mortimer driving NSW to a favorite win at the Sydney Cricket Ground. That solidified the legend of State of Origin, and after three decades it remains a final rugby alliance battleground, setting colleagues against partners in a fierce trial of a player’s psychological and physical capacities. Look at our State of Origin Index that analyzes each player, from each amusement in Origin’s 38-year history.

NSW vs QLD – Live™ Stream@ State of Origin 2018

Kevin Walters and Brad Fittler promoting the 2018 Origin series.

STATE of Origin 2018 kick-off time: NSW vs QLD

It’s Christmas, Easter, and every other holiday rolled into a 36-day period where three games steal the focus and divide NRL supporters into two groups.

Whether you bleed maroon or bleed blue, there’s no game quite like State of Origin.

And with the 2018 series kicking off on Wednesday, June 6, you may be asking some questions … who’s playing? What does it all mean? And where can I watch it?

Welcome to the 2018 State of Origin ultimate guide!

THE SERIES

Origin I — Wednesday, June 6 8pm (AEST), at Melbourne Cricket Ground

Origin II — Sunday, June 24 7.40pm (AEST), at ANZ Stadium

Origin III — Wednesday, July 11 8pm (AEST), at Suncorp Stadium

All games will be broadcast live on Channel Nine.

KICK-OFF TIME

“Kick off lotto” is a popular social media game on Origin day every year … who knows when the matches actually start.

Last year 8.12pm was the official kick-off time on the NRL’s rundown and that will probably be about right again this year, at least for games one and three.

For the Sunday night kick off, our prediction is a kick off of 7.55pm.

THE TEAMS

The line-ups named for game one are as follows:

The NSW team is filled with young blood.

NSW Blues: 1. James Tedesco 2. Josh Addo-Carr 3. Latrell Mitchell 4. James Roberts 5. Tom Trbojevic 6. James Maloney 7. Nathan Cleary 8. David Klemmer 9. Damien Cook 10. Reagan Campbell-Gillard 11. THE OFFICIALS

Gerard Sutton (lead) and Ashley Klein (assist) have been appointed as the referees for Origin I.

Nick Beashel and Brett Suttor will be the touch judges.

Steve Chiddy will act as the senior review official in the bunker, and Ben Galea will be the other official.

Ben Cummins will be on standby if either Sutton or Klein go down with injury or illness.

Origin I: Blues $1.58, Maroons $2.45

Series: Blues $1.54, Maroons $2.50

THE TALKING POINT

The turnover of champions in the Queensland side has been massive and that has to have an impact at some point.

Cameron Smith, Johnathan Thurston and Cooper Cronk have arguably been the three most influential Origin players in each of the past five series, so their absence is likely to shape the series.

The Queensland side has got a few rookies of their own.

That in itself is a massive talking point but the next step it to see how both states react.

NSW have a habit of playing below expectations when they start a series as favourites and Queensland love the underdog tag and always rise to the occasion when they’re expected to lie down.

Will this series follow the Origin narrative that has almost become predictable over the past 35-plus years or is the start of an exciting new era for the Blues?

Only time will tell.

Panthers vs Dragons – 2018, NRL Game || How To Watch

0

Panthers vs Dragons

Panthers vs Dragons, Not that they are underrated, but the Panthers are emerging as the NRL’s quiet achievers in 2018 under coach Anthony Griffin.

Guiding his team to eight wins from their first 11 games has Griffin right alongside Paul McGregor, Ivan Cleary and Stephen Kearney as the early frontrunners for Coach of the Year. He had to deal with the injury-enforced absence of his best player in addition to the loss of other key players at different stages through injury.

The steady influence of seasoned campaigner James Maloney can’t be measured, while others like Tyrone Peachey, Trent Merrin and Reagan Campbell-Gillard have also stepped up. This weekend the Panthers face arguably their toughest test of the season.panthers vs dragons

After losing to the Rabbitohs in round 10, the Dragons bounced back with last week’s narrow win over the Raiders to remain alone in first place with a 9-2 record.

This Saturday night top of the table battle at Panthers Stadium could go all the down to the wire.

Panthers v Dragons – Round 12

Key match-up: Based on the theory that the forwards will probably cancel each other out, it’s highly likely the outcome of this 1 v 2 showdown will be determined by the opposing halves. There’s every chance halfbacks Nathan Cleary and Ben Hunt will line up against each other in the Origin series, while James Maloney and Gareth Widdop will also get plenty of touches. This game is shaping as one of the most anticipated clashes of the season and the halves battle will be critical.

For the Panthers to win: After getting away to slow starts almost every week, the Panthers were on their game from the get-go in last week’s home win over the Tigers. If they get away to a flyer again on Saturday it will put the onus on the Dragons to keep their cool in a hostile environment.

For the Dragons to win: A less than convincing win over Canberra but a win all the same. They aren’t playing the Raiders this week and the Dragons will have to improve on last week’s performance against an in-form Panthers. They need to stay alert defensively after being caught napping by the Raiders’ quick taps.

Panthers stat attack: The Panthers have won 11 of their past 12 games at Panthers Stadium, while key off-season recruit James Maloney has never lost in 11 games at Panthers Stadium.

Dragons stat attack: Of their past four meetings with the Panthers, the Dragons have won all four. Journeyman forward Jeremy Latimore will play his 150th NRL game on Saturday.

And another thing: Such is the interest in this top of the table stoush that tickets had apparently all sold out by Tuesday morning. That’s great news for the Panthers and it should also ensure plenty of armchair fans are glued to the telly on Saturday night. We’re only in May but the Panthers want top spot and the Dragons won’t want to give it up.

Penrith Panthers v St George Illawarra Dragons, 7.35pm Saturday at Panthers Stadium

The Dragons have named an unchanged 17 after last week’s win over Canberra. Luciano Leilua and Hame Sele were omitted from the squad 24 hours before game time.

Head-to-head: Played 32; Dragons 20 wins, Panthers 12 wins
Matches at venue: Played 15; Panthers 8 wins, Dragons 7 wins
2017 results: Dragons won 42-10 at Jubilee Oval in round 1; Dragons won 16-14 at Panthers Stadium in round 25
Points per game: Panthers 22.6; Dragons 27.2
Points conceded per game: Panthers 15.1; Dragons 14.9
Televised: Live on Fox League

Steve Turner’s prediction

The game of the round! Penrith are a genuine title contender and the Dragons returned to the winner’s circle with a tough win against the Raiders. Nathan Cleary adds so much class to the Panthers, their forward pack is impressive and Tyrone Peachey adds the x-factor.

Meanwhile, the Dragons forward pack is a big reason why they sit on top of the ladder. Throw in classy halves and a brilliant number one, it’s hard to split these two sides. The best defensive teams going to head to head on the eve of State of Origin selection.

The Richmond Tigers will set out to break 12 game hoodoo against the Geelong Cats on Saturday afternoon at Simonds Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 2:10pm (AEST).

The Tigers are sitting at third on the ladder, and will look to have a strong end to an already successful season by jumping into the top two come finals, but they will have to go through a Geelong team that they haven’t beaten in 12 games of footy.

Richmond are on the rise after last week’s win over the Hawks, but will need to test themselves against a depleted Geelong outfit. If they hope to cement themselves as serious premiership favourites, a win against the Cats’ away will go a long way in doing so.

Geelong themselves were exposed last week without Patrick Dangerfield, getting thumped by 46 points by the Swans. While the reigning Brownlow medalist will return for the Cats, they will be without their inspirational skipper, Joel Selwood, as he undergoes surgery for an ankle injury.

Combined with this, Chris Scott’s men will also be without Tom Hawkins and Mitch Duncan, who will both be serving a suspension, as well as Wylie Buzza, who has been omitted. It paints a bleak picture for the Cattery, who are starting to look tired for the first time this season.

If they can overcome a rampant Tigers unit, however, they will continue their charge to a qualifying final in September.

The Cats have brought back Patrick Dangerfield, Daniel Menzel, Rhys Stanley and Steven Motlop to make up for their outs, while Richmond have only made the one change, bolstering their forward line with Jack Riewoldt for Anthony Miles.

Players to Watch
Richmond: Dustin Martin
The man whose signature to Richmond would mean the world, Dusty is having an All-Australian year, no more evident than last week, when he registered 32 disposals and 2 goals. Expect him to feast on a weakened Geelong midfield this week.

Geelong: Patrick Dangerfield
Returning to the team after his controversial suspension last week, Dangerfield might have won the Brownlow if it weren’t for a botched tackle on Matt Kreuzer. He will be coming back with a message to send, and will have to step up in absence of Selwood.

Prediction
Richmond by 23 points.

Geelong was badly exposed by the Swans last week, and the AFL world took notice. An injury to Selwood, and suspensions to Duncan and Hawkins have weakened the Cats immensely, and Richmond is peaking at the right time. Expect them to truly announce themselves as premiership contenders.

Can Geelong come back from last week’s embarrassment and get their finals charge back on track? Or will Richmond break their losing streak against the Cats, and tell the AFL world they are a force to be reckoned with come September? Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 2:10pm (AEST).

Hawthorn Vs Adelaide Crows

Adelaide have come away with four points to stay on top of the ladder as they defeat Hawthorn by 24 points at the MCG.

Final score
Hawthorn Hawks 13.11.89
Adelaide Crows 16.17.113

Match preview:

Saturday afternoon at the MCG welcomes the Hawthorn Hawks and top of the ladder Adelaide Crows. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 1:40pm AEDT.

Both clubs could not have started in polar opposite ways. Hawthorn fell short by 19 points to the returning Bombers, while over the border Adelaide easily put in the performance of the round by smashing the premiership favourites the GWS Giants by 56 points.

Even though Hawthorn lost they had many positives to take from the game. Tom Mitchell in his first game for the club had 37 possessions and looked to continue on his form from his former club.

Captain Jarryd Roughead returned from his cancer battle and played his part. He is only bound to improve from that performance.

Other high profiled recruit Jaeger O’Meara had spurts of brilliance and will improve also after having not played for almost 18 months.

Hawthorn have swung the axe this week, four players you’d expect to be in the best 22 with Billy Hartung, Ryan Schoenmakers, James Sicily and Taylor Duryea all dropped.

Former captain Luke Hodge returns to the team after his club imposed one-match suspension which will bolster the squad and give everybody a lift.

Where to begin with Adelaide. They ran rampant after half and they had great performances all over the park, none more so then half back Rory Laird who amassed 40 possessions and was the driving force.

People questioned Adelaides midfield depth but with the likes of Rory Atkins, Charlie Cameron and Wayne Milera all playing well they certainly look dangerous.

They welcome back fearless leader Taylor Walker to the side this week who will definitely assist them.

Prediction
Its only been 1 round but on form its hard to go past Adelaide in this contest but over the years you are a very brave soul to tip against Hawthorn at the MCG.

If Adelaide’s lesser known mids play as good as they did last week with their speed and skill it hards to see Hawthorn keeping up.

Adelaide by 23 points.

Final score
St Kilda Saints 14.20.104
Gold Coast Suns 10.12.72

Match preview:

The St Kilda Saints will look to build momentum on their way to hopefully some September action when they host the Gold Coast Suns. Join The Roar for live scores from the match and a live blog of the game at Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, starting from 4:40pm AEST.

The big factor in this game is likely to be the injuries that Gold Coast have copped in the lead-up.

Gary Ablett has been denied the chance to play his 300th game because of a calf injury, and Michael Barlow, Aaron Hall, Brandon Matera and Kade Kolodjashnij will all miss through injury as well. On top of that, Matt Rosa has been suspended.

That means the Suns are missing something like a quarter of their best side, as well as half of their starting centre bounce team – it’s not ideal.

St Kilda, on the other hand, haven’t made any changes and that stability, as well as the home ground advantage, could prove decisive.

The Saints will be clutching on to the remaining finals hopes that they have here, a win will see them knocking on the door of the 8, given the heartbreaking defeat Essendon suffered on Friday night.

The Suns aren’t without finals chances themselves but having coughed up a win at home against Carlton last week will need to win some on the road to improve their chances.

It’s a tough game to pick, both sides have some flaws in their game plans and have struggled to realise their potential in 2017.

I’ve given up making informed decisions about the outcome of games this year because it just doesn’t work. I’m going to say St Kilda, just because they might still have a chance in 2017.

Final score
Fremantle Dockers 13.8.86
Carlton Blues 7.9.51

Match preview:

In the final match for Round 9, the Fremantle Dockers will play host to the Carlton Blues. Join The Roar from 4:40pm for live scores from the match and a live blog of the game at Domain Stadium.

Fremantle will be looking to make it three wins in a row after David Mundy’s heroics last week kicking a goal after the siren to beat Richmond.

The boys in purple dominated that match for three quarters and if it wasn’t for bad kicking should have had the game well and truly sewn up.

Michael Walters now playing more midfield dominated with 38 touches and Brad Hill continues to provide that run and link with 28 touches and a goal.

They welcome back his brother Stephen this week which will add to their midfield depth.

You would be expecting a strong response from Carlton this week after their captain Marc Murphy was the talk of the town for the majority of the week after some words were said to him on the field last week which made him not shake any of the St Kilda players hands after the game, bar two.

Several times last week it looked like they were going to get pumped but they showed some great resolve to hit the front in the final term and looked a winning chance but just ran out of legs late.

Patrick Cripps played his best game to date with 30 touches and two goals, while club best and fairest Sam Docherty was the general in defence again with 26 touches and 11 marks as he continues his great start to the year.

Prediction
Fremantle should have too much fire through the midfield for a plucky Carlton outfit today on their home deck and I expect them to win comfortably – by around four goals.

West Coast Eagles Vs Sydney Swans

The Sydney Swans have won their first match of 2018 by 29 points, outlasting a largely competitive West Coast Eagles outfit at Optus Stadium to close out Round One.

Final score
West Coast Eagles 13.8 (86)
Sydney Swans 18.7 (115)

Match preview:

Two of the competition’s most prominent teams – the West Coast Eagles and the Sydney Swans – contest the inaugural men’s AFL match at Optus Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 7:20pm AEDT.

While both these teams made finals last year, they left a lot to be desired. The Swans overcame a 0-6 start to the season to make finals; wherein they defeated a resurgent Essendon before succumbing to Geelong in their semi-final.

The Eagles, too, slid into finals by the skin of their teeth. They played in what I’ve deemed the greatest final of recent years – that final against Port Adelaide – before, similar to today’s opponents, losing their semi-final against GWS.

This evening’s match is a big one: of course, it’s the first at Western Australia’s brand new stadium. It’s the Eagles first chance to demonstrate whether they not it can turn Optus Stadium into a new fortress, while Sydney’s out to claim a big scalp in ruining West Coast’s historic occasion.

Sydney’s team today is a strong one: with the exception of Dan Hannerbery, Allir Allir and Gary Rohan, they’ve got essentially a full side. They’ve got no debutants or new players in today’s side.

The Eagles will field perhaps their most important player – Nic Natanui – who returns after a long injury lay-off.

While Natanui’s inclusion is massive, they’ve lost their premier forward in Josh J Kennedy – that impact of that will be very interesting to watch. West Coast have three debutants: Liam Ryan, Jake Waterman and Daniel Verables.

Prediction
Most pundits are predicting a West Coast slide down the ladder this year, whil simultaneously predicting Sydney to remain well and truly in finals (perhaps even premiership) contention. I’m backing Sydney today: they’ll win, but expect West Coast to make it close.

Sydney Swans by 22 points

Port Adelaide vs Western Bulldogs

The Port Adelaide Power have strengthened their case four a top four spot with a late win over the Western Bulldogs in Ballarat.

Final score
Western Bulldogs 11.13.79
Port Adelaide Power 14.12.96

Match preview:

The Western Bulldogs take on the Port Adelaide Power at Mars Stadium, Ballarat, in a crucial game for each team’s finals aspirations. Join The Roar for live scores from the match and a blog of the game, starting from 1:45pm (AEST).

This season has been a disappointment for the Bulldogs – again injuries have taken their toll – but they still have a chance at making the finals and causing problems.

The Bulldogs were comprehensively beaten last week by the Greater Western Sydney Giants, but have Jason Johannisen and Dale Morris returning from injury. However, the suspension of Jack Redpath is a big loss.

As for Port, they have also been underwhelming, and despite being in the eight, their struggles against top teams have not gone unnoticed.

Last week, the Power took down the Magpies to keep their slim chances at a top-fourth berth alive. This week, they have Sam Powell-Pepper and Riley Bonner returning, while also bringing in debutant Todd Marshall. However, Jaspar Pittard was injured during training, while Callum Ah Chee and Jarman Impey have been omitted.

The last encounter between this pair was Round 13, 2016. The game was a heart-stopper, with Port kicking a goal to be within three points with just 17 seconds left, however the Bulldogs were able to hold on for a great win.

Overall, the Dogs have the edge over the Power, winning three of their past five games, however only one of those was played in Victoria, with the others being either in South Australia or the Northern Territory.

Prediction
Western Bulldogs by 6

Collingwood vs Fremantle

The Fremantle Dockers have gotten the result they wanted to christen their new home ground, beating Collingwood by 13 points in front of 41,000.

Final score
Fremantle 6.4 (40)
Collingwood 4.3 (27)

Match preview:

The first game of Aussie Rules at Perth’s new stadium will be between the Fremantle Dockers and the Collingwood Magpies, as Round 2 of the AFLW continues. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match at Optus Stadium, starting from 7:10pm AEDT.

Both of these teams fell short of expectations in 2017, and were looking to start the AFLW’s sophomore season with a win.

But both were disappointed, with Collingwood looking directionless in front of goal, and the Dockers seemingly unable to deal with the aggressive Bulldogs.

In the pressure cooker of a seven-game season where teams have to finish in the top two, already these sides are running out of chances to redeem their poor results last year.

Magpie coach Daniel Harford responded to the cutthroat situation with a bold decision, dropping marquee player Mo Hope.

Schleicher and Dargan were also omitted for the visitors, with Sarah D’Arcy serving the first of her two-week ban.

Morgan, Tesoriero and Duffin come in for their first games of the season, while Maffra product Holly Whitford makes her debut in the black and white.

The Dockers have a debutant of their own in Lisa Webb, with Gemma Houghton also returning. Haynes and the injured Green make way.

While Fremantle look patchy at both ends, their midfield had some good moments last week, many from Kara Donnelan. They’ll need to get on top of this part of the ground.

The Pies had some decent run out of defence last week, much of it from rising star nominee Chloe Molloy. They’ll be hoping to capitalise on an indifferent Fremantle forwardline.

Aside from the game itself, the first competitive match at the new Perth stadium in itself is a big moment for WA footy.

Not coincidentally, this will also be the first AFLW match spectators have to pay to attend. The peppercorn $2 tickets were sold out during the week, and on a warm, sunny Perth evening there might well be something of a party atmosphere in the ground tonight.

Prediction
Not that you’d expect WA footy fans to do anything other than scream their lungs out for the local team. In that sort of environment, you’d have to think the extra motivation and confidence might be enough to give the Dockers their first win of the season, and just their second win ever in the AFLW.

North Melbourne vs Brisbane Lions

A five-goal third term from Ben Brown has inspired North Melbourne to a 43-point win over an understrength Greater Western Sydney in Hobart.

Final score
North Melbourne Kangaroos 17.10.112
GWS Giants 9.15.69

Match preview:

The North Melbourne Kangaroos will return to a happy hunting ground in Hobart as they look to get back in the winners’ against an undermanned GWS Giants. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 1:45pm (AEST).

There couldn’t be a better time to play the Giants for opposition teams. They have an injury list which feels like it’s growing by the day and it’s starting to affect their form on the field.

With Phil Davis and Matt de Boer added this week, joining players like Josh Kelly, Brett Deledio, Toby Greene and Tom Scully among a host of others on the sidelines, things are unravelling for the Western Sydney squad.

Since their victory over the Brisbane Lions in Round 6, they haven’t looked remotely bordering on playing good footy.

A huge 61-point belting at the hands of the Geelong Cats followed, and while playing away from home at Kardinia Park is never easy, the Giants were atrocious. Last week didn’t improve things for GWS, as they lost at home to the West Coast Eagles by 27.

Their kicking across those two games has been atrocious, to put it bluntly. They kicked 12 goals and 21 behinds across the two games, with opportunities regularly ending in a single point, and while the quality across the league has been down, defences have been putting pressure on them far too easily.

North Melbourne weren’t supposed to be in the same class as the Giants this season and while at full strength they still wouldn’t be, the Kangaroos have put in a series of plucky performances to take four wins out of their first eight games.

Pool their will to keep fighting and stay in games alongside their record in Hobart – which currently reads 12 wins from 16 games – and they are more than just a chance here.

The biggest shock came in a Round 7 win away from home over the Sydney Swans, grabbing a two-point win at the death, but a win over Hawthorn a fortnight prior and losing to the Richmond Tigers by only ten points last week confirms they are in with a genuine shot of making the eight in 2018.

The Giants are only ahead of them on the ladder by virtue of having a draw instead of four losses and with the season gathering pace, the result of this one is pivotal for both teams to start building momentum and move in the right direction.

The key appears to be Ben Brown, with the Kangaroos forward leading the competition for goals. He has 26 to his name and if the Giants can’t find a way to win the battle in midfield, the 25-year-old could have a field day.

Prediction
The Giants have too many injuries and the Kangaroos like playing in Hobart too much. North Melbourne should pick up the win.

Kangaroos by 12.
